COE Spring Accreditation Institute Welcomes Over 380 Attendees to Columbus, Ohio

May 5, 2025

The Council on Occupational Education (COE) successfully hosted its 2025 Spring Accreditation Institute in Columbus, Ohio, from April 30 to May 1, drawing over 380 career and technical education leaders from across the country. Held for the first time in Ohio’s capital, the event provided attendees with enhanced training, fresh insights into accreditation best practices, and a deeper understanding of COE’s evolving standards.

Dr. Kirk Nooks, President and CEO of COE, opened the Institute on Wednesday morning with a
powerful keynote that addressed the organization’s Strategic Plan while acknowledging the rapid
legislative shifts currently impacting the higher education landscape.

“At COE, we are not just responding to change—we are positioning our institutions to lead it,” said Dr. Nooks. “The work we do today strengthens the foundation for education that works tomorrow. We must continue to elevate quality, embrace agility, and empower our communities with outcomes that matter.”

This year’s Spring Accreditation Institute featured newly developed workshops covering all 10
accreditation standards, as well as interactive sessions, compliance tracks, and leadership development for both new and returning attendees. The program emphasized hands-on engagement and embedded learning activities using the EDvera accreditation platform.

A highlight of the conference was the Hall of Fame Awards Luncheon, which honored outstanding contributors to COE’s mission:
• Dr. Linda Alford and Robert “Bob” Clark received the Sue Schooler Award for their
longstanding service and leadership as COE team members and team leaders.
• Baldwin Park Adult and Community Education was presented with the Excellence in
Occupational Workforce Partnership Award, recognizing the institution’s collaborative efforts
and impact with industry partners.
• A special tribute was also made to Dr. Darline Glaus, in honor of her retirement and exemplary
service as a Commissioner.

“These recognitions are more than just awards—they represent the heart of what makes our work
matter,” Dr. Nooks remarked in his closing. “To our honorees, retirees, and every attendee here—you are shaping futures, and your commitment inspires us all.

The Council extends its gratitude to the presenters, volunteers, and staff who made this year’s Institute a success, as well as to Orbund, this year’s Thought Partner, for their generous support and shared commitment to accreditation excellence. We look forward to seeing you at our Annual Meeting in Austin, TX – November 11–13, 2025.
